The RunLiverpool Marathon returns on Sunday, 9th October 2011 after a gap of some 18 years with 12,000 runners taking to the city's streets.

Liverpool Marathon History

The Annual City Marathon, as it was known, was staged at least as early as 1927 and was interrupted by the outbreak of war in the late thirties.

It returned once more in 1948 with estimated crowds of 300,000 watching a small field of athletes race around the city.

The event was run annually up to 1961 when marathon legend Ron Hill made his debut at the distance. The course started on St.George’s plateau and finished at Liverpool Football Club in Anfield.
